Motivate Our Students Texas, Inc, and its GAMER Program, is an outgrowth of Slam Dunk for Life. Slam Dunk for Life started out primarily as a sports camp for at risk middle school youth in Bexar County Texas. The favorable impact that Slam Dunk for Life has had on its participants is truly amazing The major pieces of information that were gained from the Slam Dunk for Life experience is simple. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the “at risk youth” and nothing fundamentally wrong with the public school system. What is missing is the motivation to take advantage of the existing public school systems.

Dr. Whitney realized that while the basketball camp was a marvelous tool to help inner city youth and had already helped literally thousands of at risk youth in Bexar County Texas between 2002 and present, it could not by itself “fix the problem”. The reasons the basketball camps can not “fix the problem” are that only 1 in 5 to 1 in 10 middle school children will attend a sports camp during the summer and the camps are only practical for middle school children. Dr. Whitney as well as many others has recognized the power of peer pressure. If you really want to change things, you have to have a program that involves all of the students, multiple times per year. The peer pressure must be changed from negative to positive. The only way to do this is through the existing infra structure of the public school systems.
